Work study and work organization The joint British Institute of ManagementMinistry of Education scheme has had considerable difficulties to face in its development, particularly because of the shortage of competent instructors and the difficulty which the man already employed in business has in maintaining continuity of study over the period of five years. It has, however, done much to raise the standard of training offered and to coordinate the work of the various institutions. A wide variety of training courses is offered in Britain by universities, technical and commercial colleges, and by adult education centres and professional organizations. At the thirtyone universities and associated colleges of technology. fulltime courses do not provide for education in business management, the nearest education being in public administration, social Studies, and economics. Mention should, however, be made of the oneyear course in Engineering production provided by Birmingham University and the oneyear postgraduate courses in Glasgow at the Royal College of Science and Technology, at the London School of Economics, and at Loughborough College. In addition, several universities including Oxford and Cambridge hold extramural courses, lasting a few weeks, on Business Management, and Sheffield University has a sandwich course in which fortnights are spent in residential training at intervals during normal employment in business. The technical colleges have responded gallantly to the tremendous demand by business for the provision of management training in the locality so that students can attend parttime and evening classes without undue travelling, and ii6 out of 256 technical and commercial colleges have been recognized as providing satisfactory courses for the В1М МОЕ examinations. In addition there are about fifty other organizations, comprising institutions, adult education centres, and consultants, who provide management training courses : in many of these the emphasis is not so much on the acquisition of management knowledge as on the broadening of the intelligence and understanding of the potential executive or foreman by exposing him to new ideas and to the sharing of experience with men from different professions. personal finance
